2020 - An Unexpected Year

Who would have thought that in a matter of weeks, we would look at hugs and human interaction in a new light? The year 2020 has undoubtably brought unexpected obstacles to society and challenged us to adapt to new circumstances. However, it is important to shed some light on the positive aspects that may not have received as much attention during this difficult year. First, we would like to acknowledge the comeback that swept the nation: Drive-In theaters. They have made a huge return this year. Dating back to the early 1900’s when silent films were prevalent, Drive-In theaters became an American staple for decades. However, in recent years we have witnessed attendance plummet due to the development of streaming services and DVD’s that allow you to enjoy Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of your home. As more and more people sought activities to keep themselves occupied while practicing social distancing, we witnessed the resurgence of the classic American Drive-In theater. This has been truly fun to see! Nature, nature, nature! This year we have had the opportunity to detach and appreciate nature. Park attendances have seen a record high since March. For a while parks were some of the only places that remained open to the public, allowing people to detach and enjoy their surroundings. We have been able to enjoy time with friends and family through bike and hiking trails, bird watching and other fun outdoor activities. Picnic anyone? Community: During 2020, society has come together! Though times were difficult, we worked together and rallied around support frontline workers and others who needed help. In addition to this, educators were shown so much appreciation after many families discovered the difficulty of homeschooling. Cheers to getting through this year together! This is something to be proud of. Now, bring on 2021!

With technology, we often think of board games as a thing of the past; however, due to more people staying at home, games are making a comeback! Choose a game that everyone in your circle has and challenge them to a game night. Holiday Decoration Contest! Half the fun of the holidays is putting up decorations! So why not have a decorating contest? Take pictures of the decor and share them with family and friends! Once everyone swaps photos, vote on a winner. Move Night! Take movie nights a step farther and use the platform Netflix Party . This new way to get together allows you to host long distance movie nights and tv watch parties, allowing you to invite up to 50 people to share your screen. And don’t forget to grab some popcorn! Holiday Playlist! Spread some holiday cheer with playlists from Spotify or Pandora so everyone can listen to the same tunes! Holiday Gift Exchange! A Fun, Quick & Healthy Snack!

If you are feeling too guilty to cheat on your diet and your taste buds are craving a sweet treat, we have the perfect solution for you! This tasty delightful treat has the whole package - it's healthy, fun to make and delicious . Whether you need a snack to go with your morning coffee or a sweet treat after dinner, these strawberry oatmeal bars will satisfy you. Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees and place a piece of parchment paper into a 8x8 baking pan – Make sure the paper covers the outside of the pan for easier removal Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, ginger & salt in a bowl. Pour the melted butter into the bowl and mix until it becomes clumpy. Set ½ of the mixture aside and press the remaining into the baking pan Distribute the strawberries into two even piles. Take one pile and sprinkle them across the pan. You will then lightly cover the layers in cornstarch, lemon juice and ½ tablespoon of sugar Sprinkle the remaining strawberries and oat mixture into the pan Bake for 35-40 min or until golden Let the bars cool – To speed this process up, you can place them in the fridge Preparing the glaze: Mix together the sugar, vanilla and milk in a bowl until it creates a liquid consistency Pull the bars out of the baking pan and cut them into smaller pieces Pour the glaze over the bars and ENJOY !
